It's mostly a matter of control and getting the mechanics of it. Thats exactly why I created Sweep Picking. But after many years of dedicated practice, Ive discovered some methods that can help you overcome those frustrations and truly master this awesome technique. And trust me, I had my share of challenges with this technique as well. Sweep Picking Arpeggios Sweep picking is a technique in which notes on two or more adjacent strings are played with one stroke of the pick. I would argue that the best way to tell if you would benefit from knowing how to sweep pick (well, any technique in general with guitar, really) is to look up whether the guitarists who inspire you use the technique and to spend some time reading up on the technique to see if the benefits to it would work with how you personally play the guitar. the technique isn't that hard and Kirk has done some sweep or close to sweep style picking early on in the RTL days. Sweep picking is something that I started early, at the age of 19. By contrast, an advanced funk player probably will have zero need to know how to sweep because that's not a skill they really need to know to be a good guitarist in that style of music! For some styles of jazz (gypsy-jazz probably being the big one), knowing how to sweep pick (although you might hear it being referring to as "raking" in this context) is pretty much a necessary skill that any lead player will know how to do. ![]() It contains a no-nonsense, straight to the point guide through all the necessary arpeggio shapes youll. For metal music (especially modern metal), sweep picking is a skill that you'll probably find most advanced guitarists know to at least some extent, even if it's not a skill they lean heavily upon.
